Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child – run by the Christian charity Samaritan’s Purse – is the largest children’s Christmas project in the world. They have been sending gift-filled shoeboxes to disadvantaged children around the world since 1990, bringing joy into the lives of over 80 million children.

Last year, over 500,000 people from across the globe got involved – including many churches, schools and workplaces. Children and adults alike wrapped and packed around 1.12 million shoeboxes full of gifts and goodies, which were then sent to disadvantaged children across Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The concept for Operation Christmas Child is simple. Volunteers purchase toys, stuffed animals, school supplies and hard candy and place them into shoe boxes or boxes of a similar size. After pickup and shipping, the boxes are distributed through churches in countries around the world. For many children, the OCC box is their only Christmas gift.

The Brighton congregation has been actively involved for some time with this program and personally contributed over 1,400 shoe boxes just last year. We also act as the collection site for southeast Michigan for other congregations to ship boxes to. Please consider joining us in this great effort!
